About the Story

Lux et Veritas is set in an alternate reality where magic is dominant and those who can't practice it, called the Venei, are the minority. The society is not so much different from our own, only with the influence of magic apparent in everything- politics, school, etc.

For centuries, the Venei and the Sorcerers lived in harmony with each other, until one fateful day a higher up from the Sorcerer's Guild (the chief political power in this world) expressed his distaste that their perfect world was being polluted by the Venei whose numbers had significantly doubled in the past year. Adding fuel to an already raging fire was the integration of Venei into formerlly Sorcerer-only schools and the suggestion that a Venei representative be elected into the Guild. Lawrence Donalbain, the higher up, broke free from the Guild, taking with him all of his sympathizers and created The Order of the Rose (called so, because Donalbain's family crest featured a rose). Scheming with the Red Right Hand, a rebel Demon faction, they began to brutally murder Venei until finally the Guild declared war against them. For three years, a war was fought and it seemed that no one would be able to defeat Donalbain and his armies, until finally a group of powerful Sorcerers calling themselves the Round Table, led by a young Sorcerer named Orlando Rosencrantz, joined the fight.

Orlando's first major battle was against the Demon Lylin, whom he sealed into a book. The rest of the Red Right Hand met similar fates at the hands of the Round Table until finally it came down to just Donalbain and his comrades. The final battle was fierce and many lives were lost, but finally Orlando and his twin sister, Ophelia managed to strike down Donalbain, and in his dying breath, he vowed to return and then placed a curse on the entire Rosencrantz family that stated (in a far more mystical way than this) that every Firstborn child in their family from then on would die young and at the time of the full moon (when magic is supposed to be strongest), any member of the Rosencrantz family would be rendered completely powerless.

After Donalbain's death, things began to return to normal. The Venei were given the rights that would have been denied them had The Order of the Rose succeeded. Orlando Rosencrantz married fellow Round Table member Imogen Vincentio and they had a daughter named Illyria. Fearing the curse, they tried their best to protect her, only to almost fail when she fell into a pool at the age of six and nearly drowned. Orlando managed to recesitate her, and thus somehow cheated the curse (since she was technically dead for a few seconds).

When Illyria was nine, word got out that Donalbain might be alive somewhere, and Orlando, Imogen, and Ophelia rose to the occasion to find him and destroy him once and for all. Illyria was left in the care of her mother's younger sister, Rosalind, a incompetant drunk and owner of a lounge. Months passed and word eventually got back to Illyria that her parents and Ophelia had gone missing and were assumed dead.

Young Illyria carried on as best as she could, finding herself struggling with her magic- odd, since her mother and father were both extremely gifted. And, of course, just when she thought things couldn't get worse, at the age of fourteen, she discovered the book her father sealed Lylin in and opened it, thus Bonding her to him. Making matters even worse than having a formerly evil Demon for a partner, Donalbain is still at large... And he wants her dead.
